Overview of Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort, Sri Lankas pioneer health resort specializing in Ayurveda, the traditional healing system of medicine dating back about 5000 years. Ayurveda tackles the stresses and ailments of modern living in a uniquely natural and holistic way.The resort is now re-opened after an extensive renovation and refurbishment retaining the warm and friendly ambience that guests have come to love.It may seem bizarre to claim all-pervasive "knowledge" of something as utterly intangible as life itself. Yet the literal translation of Ayurveda is "knowledge" - or more precisely, the knowledge of what is required to ensure a long life of optimal physical, mental and spiritual health.Since Barberyn Reef Resort first started offering Ayurvedic holidays to overseas guests some 22 years ago, it has maintained the highest reputation and continues to be the leader in this field.Barberyn Reef is one of few resorts that can be described as being literally "on the beach". Sand stretches for miles along the shore and the resort is sheltered by a long coral reef running the length of the property, forming a natural lagoon ideal for swimming. Barberyn provides a unique environment enabling guests to combine the benefits of Ayurveda with a memorable tropical vacation.Come and discover how thousands have benefited from Barberyns innovative approach to health, vitality and well-being through Ayurveda - and why so many guests from around the world return year after year. With a welcome glass of fresh fruit juice served as you arrive, your journey back to health and well-being begins here...Accommodation in Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort The accommodation at Barberyn Reef consists of 75 rooms, the majority of which has been recently renovated / refurbished. The previous Garden and Beach "cottages" are now clusters of rooms in several blocks - some on stilts and some on two levels (ground floor rooms and first floor rooms). All rooms are beautifully furnished with furniture made at the resort and have mosquito nets, attached toilets (shower or bath tubs) natural ventilation and electric fans, a terrace or balcony. Only a few rooms are air conditioned as most guests prefer natural ventilation which is recommended in Ayurveda.Beach front rooms (Formerly beach cottages)The first group of new rooms built in groups of two, four, six and eight rooms, very close to the ocean. All rooms are comfortable and elegantly furnished with wood and natural material. The majority have views of the ocean and open to a terrace or a balcony.Garden rooms (Formerly garden cottages)The next group of new rooms built in groups of two, four, six and eight rooms also close to the ocean. All rooms are comfortable and elegantly furnished with wood and natural material. Each room opens to a terrace or a balcony and accommodates two persons.Deluxe Rooms (Deluxe sea view rooms and garden view rooms)The duplex rooms are located above the dining room have high ceilings and a mezzanine floor built with wood which serves as a small sitting area. They all have balconies over looking the sea.Classic RoomsThe Classic Rooms are located on the upper levels of the Ayurveda centre and are spacious rooms with Balconies over looking the garden.Air conditioned Rooms The air conditioned rooms are located in the main building (adjacent to the reception area) opening to a terrace overlooking the sea, and a separate wing of rooms over looking a grass lawn.Standard RoomsLocated on the 1st floor of the main building, the standard rooms are with all of the amenities as in the other rooms. Each has a balcony that overlooks the garden.Barberyn Reef is set on a long strip of Beach with a reef running the length of the property, forming a natural swimming lagoon. The landscaping at the resort is being done by Sri Lankas well known landscape artist, Lucky Senanayake and his work which is on going. The resort has a casual and serene ambience which guests seem to absorb after a while.A journalist writing in The Nation Newspaper in Thailand has remarked as follows, "Lulled by the rhythmic pounding of the Indian Ocean nearby, relaxed by the kneading of daily oil massages, long-staying guests eventually emulate an aura of well-being, signaled by slower speech and a softer demeanor. No wonder, many of the guests end up rescheduling flights and extending their stays."The Reading RoomThe concept of well being at Barberyn has three dimensions – the healing of the body, developing the clarity of the mind and enhancing spiritual awareness and compassion.Barberyn is operated by a group of people who care about people. They want their guests to feel good physically and mentally, and be stronger and better equipped for their daily life. They encourage those who come to Barberyn to reflect on the gift of life and living. Guests are thus free to use the owners collection of material on Eastern and Western spiritual philosophies and self knowledge. The material, including books by prize winning authors, is available in the reading room.Guests can also borrow videos on self knowledge and inner contentment. The arts and crafts ShopAs the suburban sprawl extends to the village, old crafts that rely on patient hand work give way to modern industries and employment in the "factory". In an effort to revive some of the village crafts, and provide a sales point, the Oriental Collection draws together the work of artists and crafts people from several countries in this region. Many of the products are made using skills and designs handed down from generation to generation – beautiful testaments to the region’s rich culture and history. From naturally dyed, hand woven silks, to colourful, intricate embroideries, artifacts of wood and reed and handcrafted silver – the collection is designed to enable you to take a little treasure back with you –at a fair price.Conference Facilities in Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort Barberyn Reef provides three conference rooms to hold workshops / seminars and forums and these facilities are used by a wide range of government and non-government organizations and companies. Sri Lankan tradition requires that the host shares the food of the house with the guests. The best of ingredients go into the preparation of the meals and the service comes with the quiet efficiency. The management structure of the resort is most evident in the dining room where the waiters work smoothly without instruction from overbearing supervisors. The large and airy dining room where guests dine at "their table" each day is full of laughter and chatter during meal times. It is a place where friendships are quickly formed and single guests have the choice of joining up with others or maintaining their solitude. The dining room spills out onto the terrance for outdoor dining. A wide range of food is served at the breakfast and lunch buffet and dinner is mainly served according to the prescribed requirement of each guest. The kitchen and dining room works closely and the dietary requirements of each guest is noted by the kitchen and an individual card with directions are placed at each table. The waiters will gently remind you what you should not eat and an Ayurveda physician or a dietician is on hand at meal times to advise which specific vegetable, herbs and spices to select and at meal times which to avoid according to the prescribed treatment.Morning and afternoon tea and fruit juice is served at the tea house.
