OverviewNestled at the foot of the majestic and mysterious Paramakanda Rock Temple and cave monastery in the ancient rural heartlands of Sri Lanka, lies The Mudhouse - a private and seductive forest retreat, far from the beaten track, where life moves at your pace.AccommodationThe Mudhouse consists of two separate forest clearings where our structures have been built. The original zone has one large house in which the main ‘master bedroom’ bedroom is located. Across the clearing lies the main hut, which is designed with its unusual two-tier thatched roof. This hut can be set up as you like, with hammocks & mats, beds or wicker chairs. Some guests like to use this space for yoga and meditation. Blinds can be lowered to convert the hut into a stunning outdoor bedroom. Food is usually served in the third dome hut but can be taken wherever or whenever you choose. There is a small battery powered music system if you want to plug in your cd players or digital devices. You may prefer the sounds of nature. The main house also contains a western toilet and library, which includes a wide selection of games. Showers are outdoor and there is also a well. Our ‘second bathroom’ is the lake adjacent to the land and is great for swimming and bathing. The newly constructed second zone is found in small clearing at the opposite end of our land. The ‘family hut’ is a large and versatile creation which be configured to suit the needs of your party. Larger groups can sleep up to eight people if required. Smaller groups will enjoy larger spaces, with extensive cushioned relaxation areas, hammocks and hanging chairs. Rattan blinds are used to divide the spaces and give privacy for areas designated for sleeping. Designed throughout in our unique open-plan style, the hut is surrounded by forest and constructed with natural materials and is consistent with the overall ethos of using locally sourced materials. A short raised, wooden walkway on either side leads to separate bathroom huts with western toilets and secluded jungle showers.A tree house is hidden amongst the canopy of forest which overlooks the lake. Barely visible from outside, it offers beautiful views across the lake and surrounding paddy fields. A superb vantage point for spending lazy days watching the birds and buffalo, the tree house is also a fully-equipped bedroom with mattresses and mosquito net.The Mudhouse is built throughout using traditional village methods, albeit with our own contemporary vision. Living in amongst nature and wildlife, the comfort, style and elegant design will please the discerning traveller. You will be met with warm local hospitality, fantastic Sri Lankan food and a sense of time standing still. While away your days in sublime surroundings watching the birds and buffalo on the bordering lake.
